Dr. Michel Shamy

Michel Shamy is an associate professor of neurology at the University of Ottawa, attending neurologist at the Ottawa Hospital, and Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He leads the medical ethics and humanities program in the medical school. Dr Shamy has degrees in history (BA Yale) and the history and philosophy of science (MA Calgary) in addition to his MD (Queen’s) and speciality training in neurology (Toronto) and vascular neurology (UCSF). His research program is built around issues of ethics and epistemology in clinical practice and research design. He has over 120 publications with over 3000 citations. Dr Shamy and his team have received funding from CIHR and the New Frontiers in Research Fund to study advance consent, in which patients at risk of an emergency condition like stroke may consent in advance for clinical trial participation. In 2023, they launched ACTION, a real-world feasibility study of advance consent for participation in acute stroke trials at the Ottawa Hospital.
